Here at SharePoint Tutorial we feel strongly about giving employees the best first impressions of SharePoint and all that it has to offer. Whilst SharePoint is most often the go to for documentation, reporting or internal processes, it can also be a very daunting system for new employees to learn. Mostly because being a platform, it is often used for multiple functions within a business, meaning that SharePoint itself, is packed with confusing functionality. Especially for first time users.
Ribbons, lists, web parts and more, how do you your users learn to be productive? Better yet how do you encourage them to readily adopt the platform without being overwhelmed by all the options? We like to call it the “blank canvas problem”: When companies allow employees to adopt a “self-service model” for site collection provisioning – employees create their own sites or document repositories in SharePoint and are stuck with a powerful platform without the know-how.
There is often little thought given to SharePoint adoption and training. The IT group usually provide no training guides or funding, and line of business teams must find their own training resources. That may come in the form of the a knowledgebase/wiki site: the one that is never updated with the latest content. Or, if there is budget; conventional training. Usually this is relatively expensive on a per user basis, and managers are often disappointed with the results. Users quickly forget what they have learned. Or a support desk with the willingness, but without the know-how.
Having been consultants ourselves in SharePoint we’ve seen the results and realised that employees, especially new employees need an on demand, in context way of training themselves. Like we want on-demand taxis (Uber) or on-demand food (McDonalds), we need on-demand training.
